Union surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday announced 1253 km in the National Highway in a bid to bridge the yawning communication gap of Assam with the rest of the country.
Opening the second Saraighat bridge over the river Brahmaputra in Guwahati, the minister said the Centre has already sanctioned a Rs 15,000 crore for the purpose. “ I took the decision after chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal asked me personally, “ said Gadkari.
He further said the government is preparing a detail project report on the huge bridge over the river Brahmaputra in Majuli and work will start as soon as the report is received.
Before that the minister opened the second bridge over the mighty river in Guwahati to boost the bridge connectivity of the premier north eastern city with the lower Assam districts.
Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, MP Bijoya Chakravartty were prominent among those who attended the function.
