Despite a massive security arrangement as many as seven explosions in five upper Assam districts marred the joy of Republic Day on Thursday.

There is no casualty. But the people, mostly, refused to join the open celebration in the district and sub divisional headquarters in the morning.

Dibrugarh escaped a Dhemaji-like tragedy when the rebels exploded a bomb at a stone’s throw distance from the flag hoisting ceremony. It exploded just an hour before the ceremony forcing many people to remain confined to their homes.

Three explosions at Bihubar and Naginimara in Charaideo no less triggered panic among the people who stopped going to the flag hoisting ceremony in the morning. These are apart from the mild intensity bomb which exploded in Nazira early in the morning.

Another explosion took place near on the Dhola- Tinsukia Road and the panic stricken people did not attend the ceremony and many students refused to participate in the march pass.

Notably, ULFA-I along with other north eastern rebel outfits asked the people to boycott the celebration opposing decade long colonial rule by New Delhi.
