Assam observed Sukafa Diwas across the state on Friday to commemorate the advent of the first Ahom king Chaolung Sukafa way back in 1228.
In many places, people of all walks of life thronged and paid tribute to the great Ahom king who came down from a Chinese province through a hilly terrain of Patkai to settle the 600 year long Ahom Kingdom in Assam. The occasion began with the puja offering to the first Assamese who happened to be the descendent of the god Khunlung.
Open meetings, music, drawing and quiz competitions along with cultural functions are lined up throughout the day.
The central function is holding at the Sukafa complex in Jorhat where thousands of people are attending to catch a glimpse of the function.
Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dibrgarh, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts also observed the day as Assam Day.
The New Delhi based Assamese people also observed the occasion with a solemn function to remember Chaulung Sukafa.
