New power tariff generates ire

The additional amount of the electricity tariff runs into a hail of anger and protest.

Many organizations are believed to have been preparing statewide protest demanding an immediate roll back.

“We won’t allow it to happen. We are well prepared for a protest,” said a local AASU leader in Guwahati. AJYP, KMSS along with many other local organizations are also preparing for a massive protest for hiking the electricity tariff which comes into force from Thursday.

“The government is least bothered. We are annoyed a lot with frequent power cuts. Does the government has any shame to have hiked the tariff?,” said Porinita Saikia, a housewife in Six Mie areain Guwahati. Rupam Das from Jaya Nagar area in the city told Assam Times that BJP and its government should have thought of what they promised before the polls. “Even they were angry when the erstwhile Congress government hiked the tariff. Nobody can give the people any respite,” said Das who owns a grocery.

Notably, the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) has enforced an additional charge of 59 paise per unit from the consumers to adjust the soaring power purchase price.

The tariff for the ‘Domestic (A)’ consumers now is Rs 4.63 per unit and not the existing Rs 3.94. The second slab consumers will have to pay Rs 6.84 per unit instead of the existing Rs 6.25.

The Domestic (B) category consumers will have to pay Rs 7.44 per unit from the existing Rs 6.85. even the Jivan Dhara category consumers are not spared. Their tariff stands at Rs 4.23 per unit instead of Rs 3.79.
