Uncertainty over AIIMS in Raha

The proposed AIIMS in Assam has hit yet another course of uncertainty when the National Green Tribunal asked the Government not to proceed in Amingaon which falls in the green belt.

The recent development has revived the hopes of the people in Raha who have been demanding the country’s premier hospital in the middle Assam. “We don’t understand why what forced the government to deprive the people of Raha even after a panel finalized Raha as an ideal place for the proposed multi specialty hospital here, “ said Birinchi Bhuyan who has been leading the AIIMS Demand Committe.

“If the Chief Minister has no objection. MP Rajen Gohain is in favour of Raha. The health minister really wants the hospital in Raha, then what is the problem?,” said Bhuyan.

Mridul Hazarika, a local AASU leader told Assam Times that since Guwahatih as the premier medial college and hospital why the proposed hospital is required in the outskirt of the city. “Everybody knows there is a dirty politics behind it. The erstwhile Congress Govt refused to proceed. The new government is also dead opposed to set up the hospital. Isn’t it an example of Dispur’s step motherly attitude to the people of Raha?,” said Hazarika.

The AASU leader said, “But we will not allow it to happen. We are preparing to raise the demand in a proper platform in due course of time to show our strength.”

Notably, one person died and many others injured when police resorted to gunfiring to disperse a crowd of protestors when they blocked the National Highway No 37 demanding the proposed AIIMS in Raha. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assured the local organizations of a solution. But the things are not moving in right direction.
