Amid cash crunch voters in Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constitution are exercising their franchise to elect a new MP on Saturday.
The polling started at 7 in the morning across 1954 booths 15,11,110 voters are exercising their franchise till 4 in the afternoon.
Initially, the polling turnout was poor. But after 10 in the morning the queue of the voters went serpentine.
The fight is believed to have confined to Pradan Baruah from BJP and Hem Hari Pegu from Congress. Others Amiya Handique (CPI-ML), Hemkanta Miri (SUCI) and Dilip Moran (Independent).
The Election Commission is holding the by polls when Lakhimpur Lok Sabha MP Sarbananda Sonowal resigned after he took oath as Chief Minister.
Security forces have been patrolling the polling booth premises to ensure peaceful voting which is concluding till 5 in the afternoon.
