No halt in rhino poaching

Poaching refuses die down in the flooded Kaziranga National Park where 3 rhinos were killed for horns during the last 24 hours. That too in the presence of forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma, who arrived in the national park on Wednesday afternoon.

Poachers have killed a full grown rhino on Thursday wee hours when a huge portion of the world heritage site is still reeling under flood.
The incident took place in the Bagori range where the forest guards spotted the carcass in the morning. Poachers were believed to have taken away the horn.
The incident took place a day after poachers killed a full grown female rhino along with her calf on Wednesday.
A section of the KNP officials has tried to blame it all on the flood. But the missing horn has proved, beyond doubt, that it was case of rhino poaching.

Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore NDFB militant belonging to the Songbijit faction at an encounter in Kokrajhar district on Sunday. The encounter took place in the evening at Ultapani jungle under Bismuri police outpost. The militant cadres was identified as Bilifang Basumatary of Mohenpur village. He is believed to be the section commander in Bismuri. At least nine workers from Assam were killed and 11 injured when suspected militants triggered a powerful IED blast at Khoyathong in the heart of Imphal on Friday. Six others have been critically injured. The bomb exploded at 7.35 in the evening inside a camp where the labourers housed. Nine workers died on the spot.  Police called it an IED planted by militants. This has forced the security forces to step up vigil in the capital city.

At least 10 districts are reeling under flood water. The worst-hit are river island Majuli and the Kaziranga National Park. Rising water of the Brahmaputra has inundated vast tracts of land in Kaziranga's Burapahar, Bagori and northern parts of Agratoli with three animal casualty reported. Two deer were knocked down by speeding vehicles in Harmoti area when they were on way to the highlands, while an elephant drowned in the flood waters in Bagori range.
