The overall scene deteriorates further with the rise of water level if the Brahmaputra and its tributaries following incessant rains across the state on Sunday. The surging waters have submerged more and more areas rendering over 4 lakh people in 15 districts where two people lost their lives.
The worst-hit district include Dibrugharh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Sonitpur, Goalpara anfd Kokrajhar where NDRF and army personnel have been deployed in relief and rescue operations. Government sources told Assam Times that of the 5 lakh affected people, 20,000 are taking shelter in the 70 relief camps in 13 district.
One person died in Lakhimpur district where floodwaters washed away 2,300 domestic animals. The authorities have set up relief camps for the marooned people. Many vital road and embankments have also been damaged by the flood waters apart from dozens of hundreds of school buildings, offices and public houses.
