To rein in the widespread illegal practice, of child marriage an awareness meeting on child marriage and was held at the auditorium of Bordoloi Bhawan in Tangla on Wednesday. The awareness programme was held under joint collaboration of Udalguri district administration,District social welfare office and ROSS NGO. SDO Udalguri Dithakananda Hazarika graced the event as chief guest.

An awareness rally was also taken out throughout the town which was flagged off by SDO Udalguri Dithakananda Hazarika. The purpose of the programme was elaborated by Dimple Baruah Assistant Commissioner Udalguri. The programme was chaired by Manik Ch. Sarma which was addressed by Gautam Sahariah DCPO,Keshab Dutta Udalguri Bar President, Manik Ch. Sarma  DSWO member,CWC Chairman Binapani Devi,Udaiaditya Gogoi and SDO D. Hazarika .

Earlier Nilakshi Bordoloi DSWO felicitated the guests on the dice. Dimple Baruah Assistant Commissioner speaking on the ocassion said" We all are aware of the fact that legal age of marriage for male is 21 years and for female is 18 years. Despite in backward places girls are pushed to marriage at the age of 14-16 years.

She exhort the ANM workers to organize awareness programmes on the same in monthly basis in remote areas and report the same with photographs to Social Welfare officer.
Speaking on the ocassion as resource person Keshab Dutta spoke on the prevalent laws of constitution which prevents and thereby penalizes child marriage.

A street play was also staged by ANM workers which conveyed the message of curbing the menace of child marriage.

Binoy Medhi educationist said " Ga-dhan a kind of dowry was prevalent in earlier days where CWC Chairman Binapani Devi said primary reasons of child marriage is dowry, unawareness among masses. Young girls are exploited by in laws both physically and mentally. Laws have not been effective in curbing child marriage, Devi added.

Manik Sarmah CWC member said" Since pre-independence days laws have not effective cause the people are unaware of the post marriage troubles faced by brides."

Binoy Medhi educationist observed that even matriarchal societies where the status of women such as in Assam "The tradition in earlier days was for the groom's family to give a compulsory brideprice called 'ga' which means body and 'dhan' or wealth. 'Gadhan' generally involved giving rice, silver or gold to the bride's family.

Karuna Kanta Ojha CWC member urge district authorities to curb the menance of child marriage by promoting and creating awareness and sensitising the community to the ill-effects of child marriages.

At the end the vote of thanks was conveyed by Lalit Boro ROSS NGO general secretary .

Scooty crashed into jewelry shop

While riding her scooty, a women lost control and crashed into a jewelery showroom at Tangla Charali police point on Sunday. The showroom located just near the police point was smashed and by injured one staff. Police rushed to the spot, took the staff and the woman to hospital. The woman received stiches in her knees. Swach Bharat Abhiyan drive at Tangla

As part of Swach Bharat Abhiyan, sanitation wing of Tangla Town Commitee today organised cleanliness drive in the town. Several areas of the town have been cleaned of garbage, horticulture waste and debris. The cleanliness drive was joined by local people suppoted by members of Akhil Hindi Bhashi Bikas Parishad, students of Dr. BR Ambedkar Hindi Medium school along with the sanitary workers of the town committee. Students were seen holding playcards like 'God gave us green let us keep it clean', Use Dustbin and Live Green etc. 

Bathou Mahasabha from Feb 6

The silver jubilee session of Udalguri district ‘Bathou Mahasabha’ is going to be held at Harisinga from February 6 to 9, 2016. The Harisinga Bathaou Anchalik has taken the initiative to organise this big religious event of the Bodo culture. The venue of the event is fixed at Sonaisri Fwthar, Harisinga. Meanwhile volunteers have been put to work to colect population and education data of the Bodo people and with the collected data a souvenir magazine would be published where data's of population; education, occupation of people number of service holder, cultivates, buisiness man would be published.

Bandh hits life at Tangla

The 12 hour Assam bandh called by Hiteswar Barman led AKRSU in demand of ST status to six communities of state namely the Koch Rajbongsi, Adivasi, Motok, Moran, Chutia and Tai Ahoms had paralysed life in the buisiness and educational town of Udalguri district Tangla. All shops and business establishments, educational and financial institutes remained closed during the bandh period. However few schools and Junior colleges with low attendence of students functioned till 12.Except some private vehicles no other vehicles were seen plying on the roads in the town. No untoward incident occurred in the town during the bandh period.

Hindi speakers committee at Tangla

Akhil Hindi Bhasi Vikash Parishad, that works towards the interest of the Hindi speaking communities of four districts of BTC, had its general meeting on November 15 at Tangla where it had formed its regional committee. The meeting was presided over by Central General Secretary Santosh Shah. Speaking on the occassion he said that sole objective of the organization is to uplift the community in socio-economic, educational and cultural spheres. Chaath Puja at Tangla

Chhath puja would be observed on riverbanks and near other water bodies on November 17 and 18 at Tangla. The festival include rigorous fast and rituals spanning four days, holy bathing, abstaining from drinking water, presenting offerings(argh) to the Sun God, standing in water and offering prasad In Tangla devotees would offer their prayers on the bank of two rivers Nonai and Naika. Children's day in Tangla

Students of Arunodoi Academy Tangla celebrated Children's day in a special way. The students under the guidance of Principal of the academy Napolean Daimari distributed food packets among the patients of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha Hospital, Tangla. Hospital authorities thanked the initiative of the students. Arunodoi Academy has been taking charitable works in the area for the last several years in the interest of society. The school students also donated used clothes and cash in the charity fund.

Tangla Bengali students unit celebrates

The 15th foundation day celebration of Tangla college unit body of All BTC Bengali Youth Student's Federation was held on Friday at Bordoloi Bhawan, Tangla. The meeting was presided over by Chief Adviser ABBYSF Shyamal Sarkar. The function was marked by dance programme where students of Tangla college and various Junior College of the town performed.
