Consultation meet on women peace and security

A consultation session on ‘Linking local level network for women peace and security meeting & awareness and capacity building programme to address the issue of gender based violence and racial discrimination and legal mechanisms in Assam' was held at Bodoland Guest House in Kokrajhar with a day long programme on Monday. It was organised by the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, Control Arms foundation of India and Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace in collaboration with North East Research & Social Work Networking (NERSWN), with support from European Union and Welthungerhilfe, India.

Reena Mutum,Coordinator of the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network and Control Arms foundation of India said the aim of the programme was to address and link local level networks in BTC region to discuss issues of women peace and security, gender based violence, racial discrimination and legal mechanism in Assam, steps to end gender based violence & racial discrimination to have a common understanding and to strategies steps to bring peace in the much conflict affected BTAD and Northeast India. She said the programme also aims to help the local authorities understand existing gaps in accessing justice cases as well as to sensitize local authorities and state departments towards the concept of relevant laws, human rights and their duties in relation to dealing with the survivors of violence, racial discrimination and protection mechanisms.She said that network has been working to the issues and uplift of women across the region as well world.She also said that women among society have been facing severe situations in their living that is why the linking local level networking trying to bring awareness among society.

Madhav Prasad Sarma,Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner inaugurating the programme said that it was an important consultation to discuss on various issues of women and social values in the region. He has urged the networking group to keep up this kid of programme in the region to highlight women related issues. The proagramme was attended by various stakeholders from Manipur, New Delhi and BTAD.
