Two Assamese books were released in a glittering function held at a city hall on 15 May 2016, where audience from different walks of life graced the occasion.
The chief editor of Niyamia Barta, an Assamese daily, and also a celebratedwriter Phanindra Kumar Debchoudhury, a motivation worker Dr Minati Barthakur and journalist Nava Thakuria officially released both the books.
Published by Maram Kumar on behalf of Maramland, the first book tiled Kalam is a collection of various articles. The author of the book is Dr Birendra Nath Patgiri, who is a dentist by profession and social worker turned writer by passion.
The second book is a translated piece titled Maadhukari Geetanjali, where nonagenarian Sunanda Patgiri took the pain to go for translation. He was also present on the occasion to bless everyone there.

Properties worth lakhs of rupees have been ravaged when a huge storm unleashed a reign of terror in upper Assam district disrupting surface communication in many places on Saturday. Accompanied by heavy downpour, the hails storm hit Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Charaideo, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia in the afternoon which continued for around half an hour. Many houses collapsed and many trees, electric and telephone posts were uprooted to block the vital roads. No casulaty is reported. The United Liberation Front of Asom has strongly opposed the imposition of Sanskrit in the schools and demanded Assamese as compulsory subject in all schools. In a statement received on Saturday, the outfit’s central publicity secretary Aronodoi Asom thrashed education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the decision saying that the imposition of Sanskrit would kill the existing spirit of the mother language.
