ATM conman named Manindra Basumatari (25) son of Mahikanta Basumatari a resident of Sijouguri village under Dhekiajuli PS was nabbed by Tangla police today. He is one of the fraud racket, which was active in Tangla and nearby places for the last five months.Police have recovered as many as 5 stolen ATM cards, a driving licence,Voter ID card and a bike RC from Basumatari who will be produced at the Udalguri district court tomorrow.For the past five months over half-a-dozen people had lodged FIRs in cases related to ATM frauds at Tangla PS."Police had been probing into the fraud cases by examining CCTV footage from the SBI ATM kiosks. We got a breakthrough when the ATM security guard informed SBI Tangla officials and they called us," said OC of Tangla PS D.Kalita.
He said the security guard immediately recognised the conman whose photo was already provided to him by bank officials.
Confessing the modus operandi, Basumatari said during his interrogation that they picked their victims at ATM kiosks carefully.Apparently, they targeted old persons, especially women, at the ATM kiosks. On the pretext of helping them withdraw money, they would learn the PIN numbers. They would also give their victims spurious debit cards while taking their genuine ones.With these, they would then withdraw cash at other ATM.
