Two senior rural journalists of Assam were presented Sangbad Indra Gramya award on Monday by the Journalist Action Committee Assam (JAC)’s Goalpara district unit. Baharul Islam, a correspondent based at Kochua of Nagaon district was conferred on the award for the year 2014 and north Guwahati based senior journalist Bhairab Sarma received the award for 2013, which was constituted in memory of victim rural scribe Indra Mohan Hakacham.
It may be mentioned that Indra Mohan, who used to work for a Guwahati based Assamese daily as a correspondent from Aagia of Goalpara, was kidnapped by the suspected members of banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) on the evening of 24 June 2003. Since then the young scribe remains untraced. His wife Sabitri Das, three children and other relatives however suspect that he was killed by the militants as Indra Mohan continued to be critical to the armed outfit for many of their misdeeds.
The award giving ceremony, presided over by JAC Goalpara unit president Rabiul Haque, was also graced by Kamrup district magistrate Vinod Kumar Seshan. Held at Amingaon of north Guwahati, the meet was also addressed by JAC president Sanjib Phukan, JAC general secretary Prakash Mahanta, Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) vice-president Ranen Kumar Goswami, JFA secretary Nava Thakuria, writer-journalist Paresh Baishya, JAC Goalpara unit general secretary Benjin Boro etc.

The TMC Assam unit has opposed the draft delimitation proposal published by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday evening.
