After Mahendra Das, yet another murder convict has escaped the gallows much to the delight of the his delight.
He is none other than Holiram Bordoloi who got the court breather.
The Gauhati High Court has commuted his death sentence to lifer ten years after he killed two of his brothers.
According to a statement, a division bench comprising Chief Justice (acting) T Vaiphei and Justice C R Sarma, in its judgment recently commuted the death sentence of the murder convict to imprisonment for life.
The Morigaon sessions Judge, in case No.47(A) of 1999 convicted him in the gory offence under sections 147 (rioting)/148 (rioting with deadly weapons)/436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance)/326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt)/302 (murder) read with section 149 (unlawful assembly) of IPC and sentenced him to death.
The even the Supreme Court confirmed his death sentence vide order dated April 8, 2005.
Then Holiram Bordoloi preferred mercy petitions on April 18, 2005 before the Governor and the President. But only to be rejected.
Caught in uncertainty, Holiram moved the Gauhati High Court in 2014 for commutation of his death sentence saying on the ground of inordinate delay of about nine years and three months in disposal of his mercy petitions. Then the court gave that landmark judgment.
