Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

But he was against arrested in three more old cases.According to sources, despite directive police failed to submit the case diaries before the court. That’s what made Akhil Gogoi’s counsel to procure bail.  
Several KMSS activists have sustained injury when police sprang upon them in Guwahati as they were staging dharna demanding resignation of Rockybul Hussian alleging failure to stop rhino poaching in Kaziranga.The incident took place in Rehabari on Monday afternoon when hundreds of KMSS activists staged dharna in protest against the repeated incidents of rhino poaching in the world heritage site.But policemen deployed in front of the office of the Principal Chief Conservator of forest in Rehabari flogged the protestors.  
Finally, the axe has fallen on Mani Kumar Subba. Congress leadership on Monday suspended the former Tezpur MP four days after he submitted nomination papers as an independent candidate.During the last couple of days, Subba has been speaking ill of the Congress leadership saying that he was not worried of this raw deal and that he has thousands of supporters who would help him win the polls slated for April 7.
Bodoland Peoples’ Front has fielded Chandan Brahma in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Kokrajhar giving a raw deal for the sitting MP SK Bwismuthiary.The announcement came from BPF leadership who was holding a press conference in Kokrajhar on Monday. The party has announced the name of Sahadev Das as candidate for Mongoldoi.But a visibly upset Bwismuthiary said that he would contest in Kokrajhar as an independent candidate.    
NDFB-S militants on Monday threatened to disrupt Rahul Gandhi’s poll rally slated for Thursday.In a message, the anti-talk faction of the Bodo militant outfit said that Gandhi deserves that treatment as he does not want the well being of the Bodo people.The outfit said that they are well prepared to disrupt the Rahul Gandhi’s poll rally on March 27.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi hoped in Monday that the voters will judge the Congress party by the performance of the government.Addressing a huge poll rally in Ghoramara in Tezpur on behalf of Bhupen Bora, the chief minister said that the Congress government has no dearth of schemes covering the people of all walks of life.“Our government has done a lot. Our process of development has already percolated benefit to all section of the people. Congress candidate Sushmita Dev field her nomination in Silchar on Monday for the upcoming second phase of Lok Sabha poll slated for April 12.Accompanied by hundreds of party workers, Dev arrived at the Silchar Deputy Commissioner’s office at 11-30 where she filed her nomination papers before  the returning officer.
Hundreds of students staged dharna in front of the state secondary education board office in Guwahati opposing the move to dilute six subjects from the syllabus.Led by Assam Sanskrit Students Union, the protestors alleged a nefarious conspiracy to dilute the vital and relevant subjects from the HSLC syllabus.Protesters told Assam Times that earlier they wanted discussion with the SEBA chairman and secretary.
