Nita Ambani coming to Guwahati

A massive security is in place in and around Guwahati in view of VVIP visit to the premier north eastern city of on Tuesday. ISL chairperson Nita Ambani is scheduled to land the city at around 3 in the afternoon to attend the ISL match where NorthEast United FC are taking on Chennaiyin FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Sarusajai.

She would be accompanied by many dignitaries. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, a few of his cabinet colleagues are also likely to attend the match. All vehicles are being scrutinized on the road from Borjhar airport to Khanapara in view of the high profile visit to the city.

UPPL ready for election

KOKRAJHAR,SEP 21: "United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) is fully prepared to contest the upcoming BTC general council election to be held next year.

There is no word of unification with ruling BPF", said UPPL president Urkhao Gwra Brahma. Brahma said this at a special convention of the Kokrajhar district unit of the party at Dotma UPPL party office in Kokrajhar on Saturday.

A minority cell of the UPPL party of the Kokrajhar district unit was formed with Jahirul Islam as president and Manser Ali Sheikh as secretary along with 45 executive members of the party.

The session was chaired by president of the Kokrajhar district unit of UPPL Vidhyadhar Brahma Choudhury. Hundreds of party workers and well wishers from different block committees participated in the convention.

Opp stalls Assembly functioning

For the third consecutive days,the functionings in the Assam assembly remained paralyzed on Thursday. Despite repeated request from Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai,the opposition AGP and BJP legislators didnot allowed the House to function demanding action against the ministers allegedly involved the Dima Hasao scam. The opposition further demanded CBI probe into the scams in all the departments of the hills district. Speaker Rai had no option but to adjoured the House.

Rs 520 cr for police modernization

 The Assam government has received a huge fund of Rs 520 crore from the Centre to modernize police since 2004.

The disclosure was made in the Assam Assembly on Monday by forest and environment minister Rockybul Hussain.

According to Hussain, "Out of the total amount, Rs 68.99 crore have been spent on purchasing of vehicles and Rs 92.49 crore were used for arms and ammunition."

Hussain said the police department currently has a total of 5,270 vehicles, of which 2,532 are two-wheelers and the rest are four-wheelers and other higher carriage capacity vehicles.

For running these vehicles, the Assam Police has spent Rs 384.55 crore in purchasing petrol and diesel between 2004-05 and 2013-14.
