Stunned by the reports of starvation-like death in the Bhuban Valley tea garden, the Cachar district administration started reaching out the workers who have alleged non receipt of rations for the last couple of months.
Lakhipur civil SDO told Assam Times that the district administration started distributing rice among the workers. But sources said that the management of the Kolkata based company has assured the district administration of measures to reopen the tea garden apart from releasing the pending payments and bonus before the Durga puja.
Meanwhile, the Barak Human Rights Protection Committee leader Waliullah Ahmed Laskar told Assam Times that the rights body is in the process of collecting more information on the exact causes of death of the tea garden workers. He said the preliminary information suggests that the underlying causes of these deaths are related to malnutrition and immediate causes are lack of access to health care including proper treatment and medicines.
