An eerie silence prevails in Sarthabari a day after four persons of a family committed suicide caught in a quicksand of insolvency. A section of local residents blamed it all on the ruling Congress for allowing Prabin Barman to take this extreme step. “Since he has been an active Congress men in the grass root level. He was involved in a number of social organizations only because of his close association with the ruling party. The block level party leaders were aware of his dire need of help. But what did he got?,” said a local resident Tarini Kalita.
Aparajit Das, a college goer said that for last several years he has been doing social works downplaying his personal interest. “He was active everywhere. In party works whatever he was asked to do he did it sincerely. In other social services also he was known for unmatched attachment,” said Aparajita who got pains to say how he played crucial role in the social works.
“He had a business with a meager investment of hs own. But it put him and his family members in dire danger. He left it and for the last couple of years he has been no work at hand to earn money. But he was disappointed with his family affairs amid dire need of money,” said a local resident.
“Why partymen are not coming in rank and file to his rescue? He perhaps was waiting for help from somebody which did not come forcing him to take the extreme help,” he told Assam Times.
Prabin killed his two sons by serving them poison. After ensuring their deaths the couple committed suicide separately by hanging themselves on Saturday night. But the entire incident came to light on Sunday evening when nobody came to see their family members.
This is the second such poverty related death. A poor farmer committed suicide in the area after flood waves repeatedly ravaged his crops.

Guwahati, Feb 28: The Assam government’s decision to seek a 5 per cent stake in Oil India Limited (OIL) has triggered discussion on the State’s long-term approach to the oil and gas sector in the Northeast.
