The Shillong Press Club in association with Assam’s Dispur Hospitals has organized a Hepatitis-B vaccination camp for their member-journalists on October 17. The vaccination program is expected to start by 11 am and finish by 1 pm, where around hundred media persons of Meghalaya will be administered the first dose of the vaccine. The second dose of Hepatitis B will be offered on 3 November to complete the vaccination process.
The Hepatitis-B is an infectious and deadly disease that primarily affects the human liver. Caused by the Hepatitis-B virus, the disease may show no symptom during the initial infection. The virus is transmitted by exposure to infectious blood or body fluids. Statistics reveal that over 750,000 people die of Hepatitis-B every year across the globe.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) over 40 million Indians are living with the chronic Hepatitis-B infection. As the infection of Hepatitis-B virus can be prevented by the vaccine, the WHO recommends better detection and prevention facilities across the globe.
The city based Dispur Hospitals had earlier organized similar Hepatitis-B vaccination programmes at Guwahati Press Club and Dimapur Press Club, where nearly two hundred media persons were covered in separate sessions aiming to sensitize and encourage people to prevent, diagnose and treat the infection.
