Scheduled tribe status for six ethnic communities in Assam is unlikely before the Assembly elections polls. One after another hurdles seem to have compounded the process to accord the much-awaited status.
According to the ministry of tribal affairs, they have not received anything from Dispur to change the modalities for the new status for Ahom, Koch, Muttock, tea tribes, Chutia, Morans. The ministry has been expecting its opinion from chief minister Tarun Gogoi which has not been received.
The possibility of the delay came to light when a delegation of a student organizations met union tribal affairs minister Jual Ornam in New Delhi recently.
