Massive tree felling for railway safety!
Railway tracks are required to boost surface communication network. But construction of a railway track is not allowed at the cost of a green surrounding. That’s objectionable. The felling of thousands of valuable trees for construction of a portion of railway track in Kokrajhar triggers no less resentment among the people in the entire BTAD district.
Forest department workers have been felling thousands of trees in Kokrajhar district for the railway tracts in between Fakiragram and Kokrajhar stations much to the major worry of the people in the entire area. The authorities have cited railway safety and security. But there is more than what meet the eyes.
The first to oppose the is none other than Discovery Club, a Kokrajhar based NGO which expressed displeasure over the felling of tress in the area.
The NGO vice president Naba Kumar Basumatary said that the authorities are going by their assumptions that these trees are endangering railway safety. The forest authorities have already ordered felling 4794 trees citing the provisions of the Section 14, Chapter IV of the Railway Act, 1989.
'We( Discovery Club) visited the sites. The nature has its own course and we can’t do away with the natural disasters rather than to take measures to survive it. We just can’t go by taking examples of some accidents and do harm to our ecology rather we can think of different sustainable solutions to prevent these accidents,” said Basumatary.
