Award winning documentary filmmaker Pankaj Butalia is visiting Guwahati on 11 September 2105 and attending an interactive session with the scribes same day. The program is scheduled to begin at 5 pm in Guwahati Press Club.
Once an acclaimed table tennis player turned a professor of Economics at Delhi University, Butalia is today more known as a serious filmmaker. Till date Butalia has made thirteen documentaries and one fiction film. Most of his documentaries have been screened extensively throughout the world.
His first documentary titled ‘When Hamlet Came to Mizoram’ (1989) received appreciations from the connoisseurs of art. The creative journey for Butalia continued with ‘Moksha’, ‘Cat's Concert’, ‘A Matter of Light’, ‘Karvaan’, ‘Centrestage’, ‘Manipur Song’ etc. His first feature film titled ‘Karvaan’ was screened in Amiens, Venice, Toronto, Rotterdam, Belgium, Hong Kong, Turkey, New Delhi and Calcutta film festivals.
It may be mentioned that his least documentary titled ‘Assam – a landscape of Neglect’ will be screened at Vivekananda Kendra on 12 September starting at 6 pm. The audience may also interact with the filmmaker after the show, which will be moderated by Xonzoi Borboa, assistant professor, TISS and Urvashi Butalia, well-known activist and writer.
