Poll politics behind Sonari district

The announcement of Sonari district to be curved out of Sivasagar draws overwhelming joy. People in large number came out to the road to celebrate the announcement as soon as it came simultaneously from Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi from Guwahati and education minister Sarat Borkotoky from Sonari on Saturday.

Borkotoky who claimed to have been demanding Sonari as a full fledged district for the last 15 years started shedding his tears as soon as he announced it.

Till midnight people in many places in Charaideo celebrated the announcement bursting fire crackers followed by feasting till late night.

Political experts told Assam Times that the veteran Congress leader ensured it keeping in view of the career of his son whose son is in the race for ticket from the constituency.

“His son if allowed to contest would be able to win the assembly polls early next year. That’s the only reason why Borkotoky has been demanding Sonari or Charaideo as a full fledged district six or seven months before the assembly poll,” said Suresh Chandra Gogoi who teaches political science with a local college.

An aged Congress leader called it an intelligent move of the education minister to ensure the popularity of his son who is one of the ticket aspirants from Sonari in lieu of his father who is expected to retire.
