Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.

The Centre on Thursday said that ULFA 'general secretary' Anup Chetia would soon be brought back from Bangladesh. The surprising move came to light when group's 'chairman' Arabinda Rajkhowa held talks with the Centre claimed on Thursday. According to sources available with the government, a group of dreaded Ulfa militants has sneaked into the city with a plan to strike with a car bomb. Two poachers were killed and three others have been injured at an encounter in Kaziranga on Wednesday. The encounter took place in the Agaratali range in the wee hours. Dispur is all set to ban tobacco. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the health department to table a bill in the assembly banning all kinds of tobacco products including smokeless tobacco. A legislation would be tabled in the assembly soon.Health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Saram said that the government felt it necessary to ban all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products.The instruction assumes significance as oral cancer is on the rise in the state and is caused mainly due to consumption of tobacco products.
The Assam assembly began its budget session on a stormy note on Monday. Governor Janki Ballav Patnaik opened the month long session with his customary speech. Two poachers who are suspected to be involved in the recent rhino poaching in Kaziranga National Park, have been arrested during a joint operation by police and forest department in Sonitpur district on Sunday.Police and forest department officials, nabbed the duo from North Bank of Brahmaputra at Bishwanath Ghat.They have been identified as Aamir Islam and Moina Das and were suspected to be involved in the recent killing of rhinos and removal of horns in the park.
