Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks  along with two others are likely to get ST status.

The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic community leaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.

Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.

After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.

Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.

The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom ,  Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.

One day 2 tremors

Yet another tremor jolts the state on Tuesday. The tremor, which is second one during the last 10 hours in the north eastern region took place at 2-10 in the afternoon.The quake was moderately felt in Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts after it originated in Arunachal Pradesh along the Indo-China border. There is no report of any loss of life and property.   

Businessman commits suicide

A businessman commits suicide in Guwahati after he was upset with business. Identified as S Malow, the gold trader committed suicide a day after gold prices hit 15-month low. He was found dead at his residence in Paltanbazar.

Mild tremor jolts Guwahati

A mild tremor jolted parts of the state on Tuesday. Originated at Nongpoh in Meghalaya at round 6.54 in the morning. Panic sticken people in Guwahati came out to the streets as soon as the 4.4 magnitude quake started rattling the city.

IIT student missing

Search operation is on to find out the B Tech student of IIT-Guwahati who has been missing since Saturday. Final year student Ajay Kumar Yadav, who hails from Jaipur in Rajasthan, was last seen by his classmates on Friday. The student used to stay in IIT-Guwahati hostel. Classmates and teachers tried to call him on his mobile but found it switched off. IIT-G authorities have filed a missing person complaint in this regard at the Amingaon police station.

Police constable killed in mishap

A police constable was killed and three others injured the convoy of MLA hit a tree at Balijan near Jorhat on Monday.The mishap took place early in the morning when the three police constables were part of the security team of MLA from Mariani constituency Rupjyoti Kurmi.Constable Abdul Aziz was killed, while two other constables, Dadul Gogoi and Jitu, besides driver Mohan Tanti were seriously injured in the accident on the National Highway 37 at around 1:30 AM. The injured were rushed to the Jorhat Medical College hospital.

Bail for Sanghamitra

Gauhati High Court on Friday granted bail to Sanghamitra Bharali who was arrested six months ago on corruption charges.Police arrested Bharli charging her with amassing wealth disproportionate to her known source of income.   

Rs 70 lakh seized at Azara

Guwahati police seized a huge amount of rupees to the tune of Rs 70 lakh from a vehicle on Friday. The amount in cash was seized from a Bolero during a routine check at Azara in the outskirt of the city in the afternoon. Three persons inside the vehicle were arrested.
