Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.
A group of rebel Congress MLAs have lodged serious complaints to the party leadership against the autocratic style of functioning of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Amid escalating tension along the Assam-Nagaland border in Mariani, a section of Naga miscrents unleashed a reign of terror in Sivasagar. Miscreants destroyed tea plants at an area of 7 bighas in Geleky area on Tuesday. Security forces arrived in the spot. But by then the miscreants managed to flee away.
A warlike situation is in sight along the Assam-Nagaland interstate border. Police and paramilitary forces are on high alert to avert any incident of fresh incidents of attack by the Nagaland miscreants.Security forces are concentrating mainly on Mariani following the killing of a worker by assailants suspected to be from Nagaland at Naginijan tea garden in Jorhat district. Additional troops have been deployed after the incident that took place yesterday.
Amid escalating tension, Mokokchung District administration has promulgated Section 144 CrPC from 12 noon on June 3 in and around - Saringyin, Aonokpuyimsen, Tsuremen and Akumen- bordering Jorhat district, till further orders. The deceased Sanjay Bhumij was ploughing in a paddy field when some unidentified miscreants fired at him from the Nagaland side.
