Guwahati AIIMS draws protest in Raha

Normal road service came to a grinding halt for several hours in Raha when thousands of people blocked the National Highway for not allowing to set up AIIMS in central Assam.

With banners and festoons in their hands demanding AIIMS, thousands of people started pouring on the highway forcing many buses and other vehicles to remain stranded for more than five hours.

Talking to Assam Times the protestors said, “We have been demanding  AIIMS in Nagaon district. We were promised. But we have not understood how Dispur finally allowed it to be set up in North Guwahati.”

Another protestor said,” Nagaon district is a victim of political conspiracy where the proposed AIIMS was not allowed. The district has a huge plot of 650 bighas for the hospital.

“ The district authority has already allotted the plot. But ultimately the government on Saturday announced the AIIMS at Amingaon which we won’t allow.”

The protestors made it clear that they will move New Delhi to shift the AIIMS to Nagaon at any cost.

The massive protest took place a day after MP Rajen Gohain alleged that chief minister Tarun Gogoi did not allow the AIIMS in central Assam only because of his son Gaurav Gogoi who has been dead opposed to the idea.

No, AIIMs shold not be established in Raha as North Guwahati is more suitable place. It is a convenient place both for lower, upper and middle assam. Guwahati has railway station airport, ISBT. Though i m a resident of raha,i donot want AIIMS to be established in Raha. WE have to think for all people. Prabhas Saikia Raha,Nagaon

Mr.Prabhas you are from raha, so you might be well aware of the medical and healthcare facilities in our whole district people are dying only because of no up to date medical facilities available in nagaon district whereas there are so many hospitals available in Guwahati including the GMCH, so I dont think without the AIIMS in guwahati, it would make any difference, our place raha and nagaon district as a whole, which is in the central part of Assam , desparately is in need of a good hospital......and for your information raha is only an hours distance from guwahati....and is well connected by four lane highway and assam's biggest railway junction in Chaparmukh which is just behind the proposed plot for AIIMS ,the plot in raha, chaparmukh was just perfect for a hospital like AIIMS....as paralally on one side the four lane highway is there and on the other side the railway track and station is there and th proposed plot remains in the middle ...so isnt it a perfect place......i think it is just a political conspiracy of C.m and his son...to shift the hospital to guwahati for their own benefit....................lets join in hands to bring back the hospital to nagaon district as we need to save our people and give them proper healthcare facility.....moreover its going to boost up our locality in terms of infrastucture and various opportunities might arise for unemployed youths.

We should be clear about what we need. as AIIMS is not a mere hospital, it is primarily a research Institute. After that it is a college of high excellence and then comes the hospital angle. Hospital is there because to conduct high quality research as well as impart training to (best of bests medical students...I.e.to create top quality doctors) we need a hospital....not the other way round. If hospital was not necessary there would not have been a hospital with any AIIMS or for that matter any medical college - patient care is not a priority per se for a AIIMS Like institute. Now if we establish a top quality Institute in a semi-urban or rural area will we be able to attract the best medical teachers/researchers/scientists to this institute? Will we be able to conduct seminar/training/conferences where the best speakers (Nobel laureate for example) ...who will come & stay for months? Will the faculties (mostly city bred, internationally qualified) find it suitable to keep their families & educate their child here? Can we have high precision equipment/devices delivered quickly /hasselfree way from nearby airport? We can't be selfish to waste such an opportunity from India Govt....just because we do not have proper hospital in a district (for god's sake AIIMS is not a hospital!!)......otherwise just see to NEGRIHMS, Shillong....what they have made it.....huge infrastructure, lots of money, all facility....Alas not sufficient faculty/doctors....some come & only to leave soon. They simply failed because of lack of faculty, dnt want to continue....even after 2 decades of establishment hardly 100 (currently 80 something) faculties work at a time against a requirement of 700-800. Many are planing to leave even. Situation would have been opposite had NEGRIHMS been in Guwahati (see IIT-Guwahati a research institute now one of the best in world that too in such a short time. ...one major reason being the multitude of talented faculties coming & staying permanently .... Guwahati surely offered them all expected opportunities). What Raha or Nagaon needs a hospital ,a big tertiary care hospital that's all. They stop demanding AIIMS or for that matter a medical college. That will not serve their purpose at all.

Ghy is the most developed place in Assam with a huge polpulation from all over Assam,..Other places are not at all developed, so setting up AIIMs at raha will help to develop that area.. Besides that the proposed area i.e Amingaon is on the opposite side of brahmaputra, where traffic jam sometimes goes really nasty, plus ghy every year suffers from flood, so i think ghy should not b the place.

If u r concerning about traffic jam...wat will happen to those people from other side of brahmaputra if raha is selected for aiims...so please dnt be self centered..think about all people form northeast and remiaing india...u sud be happy dat asom is goin to hav aiims...so please stop protesting and forward ur help..thank you

It is only a casual hope who doesn't persistence of our life. North Guwahati is the proper place for AIMS.Guwahati has Railway station, Airport, ISBT and many more communications place. But can't understand why people make violence for this. If AIIMS draws protest in Raha ; ones again violence coming on in allover Assam. Eventually, we loose AIIMS from Assam.
