Gauhati University simmering as VC quits

There is a flutter at the Gauhati University campus as its Vice Chancellor Dr Amarjyoti Chaudhory has resigned citing his failures to uplift the varsity due to lack of cooperation from the Assam Government. According to information,Dr Chaudhory has tender his resignation on Saturday afternoon. Details are awaited. Notably, Dr Chaudhory withdrew resignation last year after the government assured him of help to uplift it. Accordingly, the Government released released a huge Rs 1 crorer fund in December, 2007. But the sudden and unwanted resignation has shocked the entire academic fraternity.

Dr Choudhury was our teacher when we were PU student in Cotton College. A highly respected teacher. There should be some serious mistakes in related with Assam Government which has forced bright, upright, honest officers to flee the state. This state is very difficult to work. There is no place for genuine people there. Only boot lickers, chamcha are welcomed there. I too had very bad experience worked while working in the state. There is virtually no control in the state - a lawlessness, chaotic - a shameful state

This is very unfortunate... It seems we cannot make any difference to the ailing systems we have been languishing for decades...This was the first time that any VC tried to uplift the University with a visionary plan... what is wrong with us, why can't we get past the age old problems and make our educational institutions the best in the country! I think the Govt. of Assam should take every measure to keep Dr. Chourdhury as VC and give Gauhati University its long due development. People should urge the authority concerned to make sure that Dr. Choudhury can carry out his plans for the University.

Unfortunate and boring too. With due respect to Dr. A J Choudhury sir, the same ploy will do nothing except loosing weight and faith. He should rather make use of the available resources and better make the administration solid. I am sorry to say, but what he will do the next time..? Still I would pray for him for the sake of GU.

3 held for Muslimuddin murder

Police on Thursday have picked up three people in connection with the killing of a correspondent of the Asomiya Pratidin Muslimuddin on April 1. MLA Jiten Gogoi mired in land grabbing case

Bokhat MLA is mired in a land grabbing allegation as police have registered a case against Bokakhat MLA Jiten Gogoi in Dispur following a complaint lodged by one Sashindra Das of Hengrabari area in the city. Mushroom consumption: 4 died in Dergaon

In yet another case of mushroom consumption, four people died on Thursday morning in upper Assam’s Dergaon area. According to information, the incident took place at Badulipara area when four members of the same family consumed mushroom. Details are awaited. HC allows Dr Dhaniram to carry forward research

The Gauhati High Court has allowed prominent cardiac surgeon Dr Dhaniram Baruah to proceed with his research works which was barred by the state health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.According to information, hearing a writ petition on Wednesday a bench of the court said the health department's order imposing restrictions on Dr Baruah was one sided.It may be noted that addressing a recent press conference in the city, the minister threatened to arrest Dr Baruah if he fails to stop his research in the form of administering vaccine to to the human body. But Dr Baruah opined that he had already received permission in 2005 by the same department.

Assam, Meghalaya mired in boundary dispute

Assam's problems: Governor to talk to Centre Assam Governor Lt general (Retd) Ajoy Kumar Singh on Wednesday said he would soon take the Assam's problems to the Centre for an amicable solution. He invited the All Assam Students Union leaders for talks to the Rajbhawan and discussed the formation of a task force for protection of the state's wild life. Some other burning issues were also figured in the discussion. Other issues included the Assam Accord implementation, sealing of the Indo-Bangla border, upgradation of the National Register of citizens and erosion and flood problems.

Assam Bandh evokes mixed reaction

A 12 hour statewide Assam bandh has disrupted normal life in some parts of the state on Wednesday.
