Hardly a week after it was floated, the Ganamukti Sangram Samity has demanded special status for Assam under Article 371 (A) of the Constitution.
In its maiden press statement, the new political party further demands Scheduled Tribe status for six ethnic communities which was denied by the Centre a few days back.
Party leader Akhil Gogoi maintains that only the special status is the best possible way to ensure the exclusive rights of the people of Assam over land and all other natural resources.
Gogoi further believes that ST status is required to uplift the Koch-Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Moran, Muttock, Chutia and tea tribe communities. He said it would help these communities protect their indigenous identity apart from getting economic advantages.
