The Centre’s No to the ST status for six ethnic communities runs into a hail of protest on Tuesday.
An influential Tai Ahom organization is staging dharna in Dispur in protest against the decision on Tuesday a day after they came to know the decision of the Centre. With festoons, banners and playcards, hundreds of Tai Ahom students are holding a day long dharna at the Dispur Last Gate from the morning.
Talking to Assam Times in Dispur, AATASU threatened to intensify the strike till they are not accorded the ST status along with five other ethnic communities.
“We won’t sit idle. We want ST status. We are all prepared to face any eventualities. The Centre must fulfil its promises,” said a senior AATASU leader who came to Dispur to register the protest.
Another AATASU leader told Assam Times that they if need be, they would stage dhara at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to draw the attention of the Centre.
“Our demand is old. We were assured of ST status on several occasions. Now we want the government to fulfil the promises,” he said.
