Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.

Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.

The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.

Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

This exposes the governments scandalous motives and false poll promises. This also goes against the spirits of the Pro Talks faction of ULFA , whom the government had promised the STfication of the state .Successive governments have done this and the present has proved that they are no better than the previous.

Heatwave toll goes up to 11 on Thursday after three persons person died of heatstroke in Goalpara on Thursday. Before that two persons died in Bokakhat and Gohpur. A street dweller was killed in the heat on Wednesday. The body was found under the Ulubari flyover. Apart from him, a 70-year-old man, Sibulal Rabidas, died in the heatwave at Lalamukh Tea Garden in Hailakandi district. A 65-year-old man died of heatstroke in the Labourputa area of Cachar district. No relief from heat

The regional meteorological centre in Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8°C on Wednesday. It predicts hardly any relief during the next 48 hours. Schools and colleges are remaining closed under the impact of the heat-wave. The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has instructed schools across Guwahati to remain shut on Thursday and Friday.

Gogoi to continue as CM: AICC

Amid growing revolt against Tarun Gogoi, AICC has ruled out a change in the chief ministership which has downplayed the dissidence.Party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary told reporters in Delhi, “some people have certain views. They have come here to voice those. Concerned people will discuss the issue with them."Gogoi's recent visit to the capital fuelled speculation that he was demanding that certain ministers in the state opposed to him should be dropped.

Dissident MLAs up ante on Gogoi

A group of rebel Congress MLAs have lodged serious complaints to the party leadership against the autocratic style of functioning of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
