Dr Syed Iftikar Ahmed, chairman of Guwahati based NGO ‘AIDS Prevention Society’ and a member of Lions Club of Narangi (District 322D) has been invited to attend the Lions Day program at United Nations’ headquarter in New York. The theme of Lion International program, to be held in the first week of March 2015, is ‘Children in Need’ and it will be addressed by key UN speakers dwelling deeper into the subject matter.
Dr Ahmed, who designed and implemented a flagship project in India for preventing the children from acquiring HIV from their infected mothers, is scheduled to present the outcome of the project at the UN meeting. The European Commission in Brussels had already honoured the innovative scientific research project in an international competitive bid.
The project, implemented between 2001 to 2007, involved the screening of 6,000 antenatal mothers who were administered anti retroviral drug ‘Nevirapine’ and it showed encouraging outcomes with drastically reduced rates of infection from the mother to the newborn baby. The entire process was monitored by the European Commission experts and was evaluated by the scientists belonged to Indian Council for Medical Research.
President of the North East India Harm Reduction Network (NEIHRN) Dr Ahmed earlier attended the UN General Assembly’s a special session on HIV/AIDS in 2008, where he successfully raised the serious issue of Hepatitis C & HIV co-infection that had taken many lives including young people till date in northeast India.

Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Police suspected it a handiwork of ULFA for triggering explosion targeting security forces. Later army bomb squad team defused the bomb.
Guwahati Police have arrested 8 persons including a Mizoram forest department official and recovered some rare species of snake in Guwahati.
