Polling to 74 municipal boards and town committees concluded today amid tight security. Barring a few sporadic incidents, polling was largely peaceful. Voters turned up in 1,748 voting centres to cast their votes to select representatives to 32 municipal boards and 42 town committees. While 367 of the total 746 wards are reserved for women candidates, 32 wards are reserved for ST and seven wards are reserved for SC candidates.
The civic polls have assumed importance in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections next year. While the ruling Congress swept the last urban civic polls, this year the party is likely to face a tough time given the performance shown by the BJP and AIUDF in the last parliamentary elections.
The counting will take place on February 12.
