The 28th Guwahati Book Fair and Literature Festival begins at the Assam Engineering Institute playground from today. Education Minister Pradyut Bordoloi inaugurated the event. Justice Subhasis Talapatra, Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bora, Chairman, Guwahati Literature Festival, Nilmoni Phookan, Hemanga Kishore Sarma, Comm. Sec, Education Dept. & Secretary of Publication Board of Assam were present the ceremony.

Nilmani Phukan was awarded Life time Achievement award by Publication Board of Assam at the event.

Police have extracted some sensational disclosures on rhino poaching after they arrested two poachers in Morigaon district on Wednesday. The duo were believed to have made a disclosure on the rhino poaching network and smuggling of rhino horn. Identified as Khairul Islam and Hanif Ali, the poachers were nabbed from the Pobitora Wilflife Sanctuary on Wednesday.         
Forest guards in Kaziranga National Park claimed to have killed a dreaded rhino poacher at an encounter on Wednesday. The encounter took place near Gotonga forest camp under the Bagori range of the national park in the morning where the poacher was killed on the spot. Later forest guards recovered a modified AK-47 rifle along with 16 rounds of the live cartidges.
 The eviction drive is a step in turn direction if it really tends to clear the hills and wetlands in Guwahati. Flood waters are wreaking havoc in many parts of upper Assam districts throwing normal life out of gear. The river Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level following the heavy downpour in the catchment areas in the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.  Many parts Jorhat districts have come under the surging waters of the river Bhugdoi. The flood waters of the Teok river have shown some let up sign on Wednesday. In Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, most of the rivers are flowing above the danger level where flood waters have damaged crops in several hectares of land. 
Officials of GMDA, GMC and water resources departments are carrying out eviction drive for the fourth consecutive day in Guwahati on Wednesday. Led by executive magistrates, the specially setup teams has been demolishing illegal huts and big buildings in the wetlands and hill tops to make the entire city free of encroachments. Talking to Assam Times, Kamrup(metro) district administration officials made it clear that the eviction drive would not halt till  the city is made free from encroachments.    A section of the residents welcomed the move while some others opposed it saying that the poor lots are the victims.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is all set to take the final call on the paralyzing dissidence within the party legislative body. AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge has submitted his findings before Sonia Gandhi on the dissidence issue within the Assam Congress legislators. The senior Congress leader was believed to have handed his findings before the party president on Monday evening on te enitre issue where several legislators backed by health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma opposed Tarun Gogoi as chief minister. Sources told Assam Times that Sonia Gandhi is expected to take the final call in a day o two.  
Its yet another blow for the electricity consumers. Electricity tariff goes up. It is up by 34 paise per unit from Tuesday. The proposal was approved a couple of months back. A simultaneous drive to evict the illegal settlers in the Guwahati hilltops is underway.   Consisting of executive magistrates, GMDA, GMC officials along with security forces, the specially setup teams launched the operation in 377 vulnerable spots where the settlers have been asked to come down from the hill tops within 24 hours.
