Gauhati High Court Celebrates Diamond Jubilee

The towering white structure of the Gauhat High Court, a landmark of Guwahati stands tall glimmering in the city skyline. A keeper of law and a defender of justice it has been advocating justice since the past sixty years of glorious existence.

It was way back in the year 1948 on April 5 Ronald Francis Lodge was appointed the first Chief Justice of the Assam High Court. The Assam High Court was inaugurated by then chief justice of India Justice Harilal Kania in the present house of the district and sessions judge , Kamrup Guahati on the western bank of Dighalipukhuri. The inaugural ceremony was attended by many luminaries of Assam including Sir Akbar Hydari, Pemier Gopinath Bordoloi, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed etc.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed , the Advocate General of Assam guaranteed complete cooperation of the members of the Bar Association for the administration of justice.

The High Court initially had its sitting in Shillong but in July 1948 the government decided to shift it to Guwahati. However, its new building at the present site was inaugurated in 1957.

RF Lodge, TV Thandani and Ram Labhaya (Puisine Judge), were the judges while FA Ahmed, the former President of India was the Advocatw General along with kairam barman, bhabesh Chandra Barua and lyngdog as the Government Advocates.

Since its inception the Gauhati High Court has been continuing its crusade for justice in northeastern India. It has earnestly carried out its task in this region despite the varied laws and customs of the region.

In keeping with the constitution of modern India the Supreme Court and the High Courts became constitutional guardians of the people and for the past 60 years the Gauhati High Court has carried forward a legacy of justice in a democratic society.

Apart from its principal seat at Guwahati the court has under its umbrella the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal pradesh having its benches at Shillong, Kohima, Imphal, Agartala, Aizawal and Itanagar.

The Diamond Jubilee Celebration was organized at the ITA Complex at Machkhowa, in Guwahati. The legal fraternity of India, from the Chief Justice of India, Justice KG Balakrishnan to Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Jasti Chelameswar was all praise for the Gauhati High Court.

I hope with this new structure, there is a renewed sense and passion to uphold the justice. As it is, if we see the records, the North East stands out, there are no adverse news of offenders getting off the law using money neither do we hear or see anything adverse, this could mean that probably mainstream media is not worried or does not care what happens in the state, of which the probability is remote. Reading the article made me feel that it was some sort of tourism drive of North East, I mean it was good, colorful but I am wondering, is this all what writer wanted us to read? I have been an avid reader of your articles, but gradually down the line somehow I feel that the spirit of writing has been compromised, the ‘zing’ in this particular essay is missing, I thought I was reading a page 3 article but only in dignified manner. With a new high court structure, you could have given us the list of problem which demanded this new structure, pending cases, space, utilization plans. There were lots of articulated words, cinematic narration but the strike was missing. Not that I wish to be a critic, but we see lot potential in your writing which we want you to realize or if I may put this way, there are lot of issues that we want to highlight through you and make ourselves aware. Keep writing.

Kind Attention Your honour, 100% Correct, one thinks I understand that if you have money then you can get anything, every thing is possible then you. Otherwise if you are a poor then you can’t get anything, every thing is not possible then you, also then you get poor judgment, and poor comportment in all aspects of life, in our country INDIA. For example 1. I. I go to Police Station near about 100 times, give their 5 G.D. but Nothing gets. Other side 2. Sandip Samanta, S/O. Shankar Kumar Samanta S.B.I. they have much more money so they purchase all police and some political leaders, some dada. Etc. Only I get many letters and many phone calls which all seem to me needs to be thrown in the trash, as it all are valueless. Only simply a solace to the poor. If you man not doing something for truth, then closed your department, much money are save in our country. Am I Right? Yes. We got Married 05/03/2002, and have a daughter born 09/07/2005. My wife and she’s family given me 498a/34 IPC, FIR NO.276, date 31/08/2009, P.S.: BAGUIATI, it’s not true case, believe me. My wife are engaged/Affair with a boy (Sandip Samanta, S/O. How safe is our wildlife?

Another rhino bites the dust in Kaziranga National Park as poachers struck again in the supposedly conserved abode of these rare species. Altogether 17 rhinos have been killed by poachers or have drowned in floodwaters since January 2007. On September 16, poachers shot a rhino at Hatikhuli tea estate near the national park.
