A US team is on a visit to Assam to find out the mortal remains of their four soldiers who died in air crash during the World War II. Led by David Gooch, the team under the banner of Joint Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Accounting Command is visiting Sivasagar district.
The focus of attention is a tiny village in Charaideo where the US team along with the officials of archeological survey of India is searching the remains of the US soldiers. The team starts search operation from Wednesday till November 5. The mortal remains, if found, would be handed over to the family members.
The crash took place on June 26 in 1944 when the US war plane crashed with eleven soldiers in Kothiakhunda village. Bodies of seven soldiers were recovered. Four others were left out because of an unavoidable circumstances.

The US Government is currently working with Rimo Expeditions to recover the mortal remains of four crewmen still missing from the crash of the US Army Air Force B-29 bomber "Eileen", which crashed in Assam's Sivasagar district on 26 June 1944. The missing airmen are 2nd Lt. Walter B. Miklosh of Illinois, Flight Officer Chester L. Rinke of Michigan, S/Sgt. Donal C. Aiken of Washington state, and T/Sgt. John M. Larkins of Tennessee (sources: C. M. Quinn, The Aluminum Trail (1989), National World War II Memorial). We pray that their remains will be recovered and returned to their families. A police constable was killed and three others injured the convoy of MLA hit a tree at Balijan near Jorhat on Monday.The mishap took place early in the morning when the three police constables were part of the security team of MLA from Mariani constituency Rupjyoti Kurmi.Constable Abdul Aziz was killed, while two other constables, Dadul Gogoi and Jitu, besides driver Mohan Tanti were seriously injured in the accident on the National Highway 37 at around 1:30 AM. Two hardcore ULFA militants were killed at an encounter with security forces hours after the outfit observed its foundation day.The fierce gun battle took place at an open paddy field in Bordoloni area in Dibrugarh district in the wee hours. A woman died and another was injured at an incident of dacoity in Guwahati on Monday.The incident took place in the wee hours at Jyotinagar area in the city when a gang of dacoits stormed into the house of Aloka Kalita and tied the hands of the family members. CBI will probe the cases of rhino poaching since 2008 at the Kaziranga National Park. The ministry of personnel, public grievances and pension informed the government on Saturday that the CBI will investigate rhino-poaching cases of the Kaziranga National Park. The CBI take up all cases three to five years old. In 2012, poachers killed 39 rhinos and removed their horns, and in 2013, the casualty figure is 16 so far. The KNP has the world's highest population of one-horned rhinoceros.
National Tiger Conservation Authority is organising a training programme at KNP on April 20 on the subject of investigation and forensic in wildlife offences. The government asked for such a session as knowledge of legal matters on wildlife offences is less among officials. CBI Mumbai Joint Director Keshav Kumar will chair the training.
