A specific mechanism has to be there to ensure sustainable development keeping in mind the rural economy, said Dr Abani Bhagawati.
Participating in the round table conference in Guwahati on Thursday, the senior professor and head of Geography with Gauhati University said that development will be not pro people if one ignores the rural economy.
He said that the economy and ecology have been inching closer to each other these days. But nobody has any authentic information on some crucial things that shape the economy.
“We don’t have any data on land used for shifting cultivation, rain water harvesting, lives stock and even ploughs and bullocks. Squarely we don’t have any information on squirrels and monkeys that ravage the rural economy. We must know these if we need a set of strategies to uplift the rural economy,” said Dr Bhagawati.
The Assam Times Foundation-sponsored event focused on piloting initiatives for the protection of environment and natural resources to be participated by several experts in the field of petroleum, environment, law and geography apart from many north eastern NGOs
