BJP smiles in Silchar

Ruling Congress lost Silchar assembly seat in the bypolls conducted on Saturday. The defeat was so humiliating that the party candidate Arjun Dutta Majumdar had to remained satisfied with third position.

The contest was straight between BJP candidate Dilip Kumar Paul and AIUDF counterpart Nur Ahmed Borbhuyan who was defeated by a margin over 36,000 votes after the end of the final round of counting.

Paul got 71,876 votes to defeat his nearest rival AIUDF candidate. The Congress candidate was slammed to third position.  

 

The counting began at 8 in the morning amid tight security arrangement. The by poll was required following the election of MLA Sushmita Deb to the Lok Sabha in the recent polls.
