Katakey panel to probe Golaghat firing

Justice (retd) BP Katakey will probe the circumstances leading to the police firing in Golaghat town and its adjoining areas on August 20, 2014.

The Assam government has issued the formal notification saying that the one man panel of enquiry will ascertain the circumstances leading to and the act of police firing.

Further, it will also examine whether police action was resorted to after exhausting all available non-lethal options of crowd control in the given circumstances.

Apart from these, the panel will further ascertain if any person or organization were responsible for inciting or encouraging mob violence.

The Commission will submit its reports within three months from the date of issue of the notification for its formation, ie., August 28. /
