Cashew nut cartel!

After egg, betel leaf, fish and meat, now it’s the cartel of cashew nuts that makes the fruit more dearer for common people these days.

Some sensational revelations have come out during the investigation by the Assam Times.

A part of the cartel has been remaining active in Fancy Bazar area where Shanti Lal, Manoj Moore and Sunil Bothra have already stopped the rush of cashew nuts from outside. Cashew nuts procured from Mancachar are available in the Guwahati markets these days.

The trio have been running this cartel under the patronage of a powerful circle of people in Dispur which is why, these people have been maintaining a studied silence on the allegations of this dirty deal in cashew nuts.

Its strange to note. Raw cashew nut is available at Rs 65 per 2 KG while the price of a dressed cashew nut is available at Rs 480 per kg (If 2 kg raw cashew nut are required to get 1 KG of dressed cashew nut).

The raw cashew nuts procured from Garo hills are processed in Mancachar by the industries run by Dilip Bothra and Mahesh Agarwalla.

The workers are allegedly underpaid where they get Rs 50 for processing cashew nut per kilo in addition to Rs 20 for electricity charge.

With 20 percent benefit for the traders, the cashew nuts should have been available at a price not more than Rs 250.

But the cashew nut price stands at Rs 480 per KG only because of the cartel where Mancachar MLA Javed Islam mires in controversy.

According to allegation, the dissident MLA has been patronizing the entire cartel of cashew nuts with tacit support from a section of officials from the Dhubri administration.

It take about 4 kg of raw cashew to get 1 kg of the processed cashew nut which is being sold in the market. The investment in raw material is high, and also the rate of raw cashew reaches to about 80-100 kg during the off season. Hence, the prices are high.

5 injured in Numligarh protest

At least five persons including a policeman sustained injury in Golaghat district in a fresh clash between security forces and protesters Thursday. The clash erupted in Numligharh when protestors in large number blocked the National Highway. Eerie calm in Golaghat

 The uneasy situation refuses to die down in Golaghat a day after three people were killed in clash with security forces. The Army is holding a flag march in violence hit areas to bring the situation under control a day after the administration clamped curfew in some sensitive pockets. People in many places thronged in thousands in protest against the police firing on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the tea garden areas, armed with bows and arrows a section bandh supporters blocked the roads.     

Statewide bandh total

The AGP-sponsored statewide bandh is total disrupting normal life on Thursday. AGP leaders and activists along with some other bandh supporters came out to the streets in many places. A section of the bandh supporters burnt tyres on the streets to block the vehicles. Shouting slogans, the protesters asked chief minister Tarun Gogoi to step down immediately owning moral responsibility for the border flare up.  Our correspondents from Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, BTAD, Darrang, Nagaon, Barpeta, Dhubri have reported total bandh on Wednesday. Backed by 13 organizations, the AGP sponsored bandh will end at 5 in the evening.

Land dispute: Reason behind violence

What triggered the flare up along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district? The answer is bizarre if one go through the home ministry report. According to the report sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the entire shocking episode was triggered by a trifle and dispute between Salman Sama, an Adivasi farmer and a Naga person Ekon Lotha. Then it took an ethnic turn when the Adivasi National Liberation Army took the side of Salman while NSCN-IM and Khole Kitovi backed Lotha. Steps to relocate more forces

The Centre is in a mood to relocate more forces to Golaghat district bordering Nagaland to defuse the escalating tension. These are apart from the existing 200 companies of central paramilitary forces already in the region. It further wants the 10,000 people displaced resettled under the protection of the central forces. The Central government also wants Nagaland to announce compensation equal to the Rs. 8 lakh each announced by the Assam government for all those killed in the ethnic clash.    

Rijiju meets Gogoi, Zeliang

Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju meets chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his Nagaland counterpart TR Zeliang in Dispur on Thursday. Rijiju reviewed the law and order situation along the inter state border with Gogoi before talking to TR Zeliang who apprised him of the situation prevailing in Nagaland. Defuse tension: Rajnath to CMs

 Union home minister Rajnath Singh asked Assam and Nagaland chief ministers to defuse tension along the borders of the two states where at least 18 people lost their lives in Golaghat districts. Singh’s appeal came to Tarun Gogoi and TR Zeliang a day before the much-awaited fence-mending talks in Dispur on Thursday. The Union home minister told both the CMs to come up with a joint statement on Thursday. Talking to Singh over telephone on Wednesday, Gogoi sought from him additional companies of paramilitary forces to restore normalcy in the affected areas. A joint Secretary would be visiting the trouble torn areas on Thursday to take stock of the situation.

Why don’t blame Centre ?

 Stunned by statewide criticism, chief minister Tarun Gogoi blamed it all on Union home minister Rajnath Singh for the Assam-Nagaland border flare up. Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Wednesday, Gogoi said the Centre has failed to provide security in the border region. Gogoi deplored that he was responsible as a chief minister. But in the same breath he dared the political parties and organizations slamming his to show the same approach to the Centre.   “ Why are same charges not being made against the union home minister for failing to give protection?" said Gogoi. He alleged that the Centre was not taking the issue seriously at all.

Curfew in Golaghat; 3 killed in firing

 Yet another place in Golaghat turned into a battle field on Wednesday a after the Rangajan tragedy. Three people were killed and at least 30 others sustained injury when security forces sprang upon a huge crowd of protesters in Golaghat district on Wednesday. The incident took place at Erengapar area when a section of people who took to the streets in protest against the Rangajan police excess, clashed with the security forces who tried to quell them. The situation suddenly took a worse turn when a section of the protestors allegedly attacked the security forces.
