Security forces seem to have been fanning in and around the Chennai Central Railway Station after two explosions rocked the Guwahati-B’lore Expression on Wednesday morning.
Local police have held one person from the railway platform. NSG and NIA teams have also arrived in Chennai to probe the incident. The explosions took place with a huge sound at Coach No S-4 and S-5 at 7-10 in the morning minutes after the Guwahati bound train arrived at the No 9 platform.
A woman died on the spot while two others were believed to have succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. But the Railway authorities have confirmed the death of only a woman. Eyewitnesses told Assam Times from Chennai that the first explosion took place beneath the seat occupied by the woman passenger who died on the spot at Coach No S-4.
According to information, three others, who have sustained serious injuries are battling for life at the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital. Security forces have cordoned off the entire railway station in search of the perpetrators. But nobody has owned up the responsibility.
Meanwhile, the authorities have announced Rs 1,00,000 ex gratia for the deceased’s family members, Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured passengers and Rs 5,000 each for the passengers who have sustained minor injuries.
