83% polling in Dhupdhara

The polling in Dhupdhara area of Goalpara district under Guwahati parliamentary constituency passed off peacefully except a few incidents of malfunctioning of EVMs in three poll centres. The brisk polling was witnessed in the morning today at several polling stations at Dhupdhara and its outskirts. The casting was started as usual but the defect was witnessed in the EVM before start of the polling in one of the centre at Dhupdhara High School. Polling in Kothakuthi centre and Ambari ME School was also disrupted due to the defect found in EVMs. But immediate replacement helped to complete the polling peacefully.

According to the official sources, 83.14 per cent polling was reported in Dhupdhara sector which included 11 polling centres numbering from 187 to 19.

12 shops gutted as fire broke out at Dudhnoi

As many as twelve shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out at the market near NH 37 at Dudhnoi town in Goalpara District in the early hours on Friday. The fire that started accidentally in a cloth store quickly spread to ten other neighbouring shops before amassing a huge part of the market. However, the exact cause of the fire has not yet been established. The inferno soon raised an alarm amidst the gathering crowds who immediately called the fire service to extinguish the blazing fire. But the damage was already done before it could be controlled. Although no injury was reported, the gross damage incurred was estimated at around one crore rupees.

NDFB Cadre Killed in an Encounter in East Garo Hills

2 suspected militants from the anti-talks faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland were shot dead while other 3 escaped, in an encounter by security forces at East Garo Hills, Meghalaya in the wee hours of Saturday. Bus-truck Collision, 8 killed, 40 injured at Rangjuli

Eight persons were killed and 40 others injured, ten of them critically, when a bus collided with a 10-wheeler truck at Rangjuli in Goalpara district on Monday. Police, Indian Army of 9th Sikhli Regiment and medical emergency personnel rushed to the spot to rescue the injured. The speeding bus, bearing no. AS 01 DC-7245, was on its way from Fakiraganj of Dhubri district to Guwahati, and the truck (HR 74/3734) collided head-on at Rangjuli on National Highway 37 killing 2 persons on the spot and 6 others in the hospitals at Dudhnoi and Goalpara.
