PM coming to cast vote

Dispur turns into a security fortress a day before the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls. Dispur Govt HS School seems to have drawn maximum concentration of the security forces.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to visit the school to exercise his franchise on Thursday. Dr Singh, who is on his last visit to the state as a prime minister, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati Airport at 12 noon by a special plane.

Then Dr Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, will straightly leave for Dispur by a helicopter where he would cast his vote at the Dispur Govt HS School at around 12-30.

During his brief visit to the capital city, Dr Singh will meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi and state Congress president Bhubneswar Kalita.

A team of special protection group has already arrived in the school premises to ensure safety and security of the prime minister whom Assam adopted in 1991.

Blast rocks Sonitpur railway station

A grenade explosion rocked Belshri railway station in Sonitpur district on Friday. But there was no report of any injury. According to police, a five-member group of unidentified persons on motorcycles lobbed two grenades at a paddy field at Belshri under Misamari Police station at around 3.30 in the afternoon. A grenade went off at an open space near the railway station. Another unexploded grenade was also recovered from a well in the area by the local people. 5 killed in Palashbai accident

At least five persons were killed when a the vehicle carrying them collided head on in a dumper Palashbari area in the outskirt of Guwahati on Friday.The shocking accident took place in the afternoon at Bhagawatipara where a women died on the spot. Four others succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The deceased were identified as Amulya Kalita, Ratan Kalita, Prafulla Mahanta, Putul Kumari and Damayanti Sarma. Five others injured in the accident have been undergoing treatment at the hospital. Body recovered inside train

An unidentified body of a girl was found from a compartment of the Awadh-Assam Express at Guwahati Railway station on Friday.The body was found after the train arrived in Guwahati from Lalgarh in Rajasthan to be spotted by the cleaners inside a plastic drum near the bathroom of S-7 coach. Railway authorities have ordered an enquiry and efforts are on to identify the passengers, who had boarded the coach and left the bag.

HSLC exam begins; results on May 15

The High School Leaving Certificate and High Madrassa Examinations get underway along with the higher secondary examinations across the state on Monday.Amid tight security arrangement SEBA holds HSLC examinations for 3,84,702 candidates at 823 centres.  The Assma Higher Secondary Education Council conducts the Higher Secondary examination in the Arts, Science, Commerce and vocational streams at 768 centres with 2,36,971 candidates. SEBA will announce the HSLC results on May 15.

Ensure Assam safety: Gogoi to Centre

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the Centre to ensure that any dam related activities by China in Tibet do not cause ecological problems in the state.Gogoi said in Guwahati on Sunday that if the problems could be addressed, then communities residing in the catchment areas of the river would benefit.According to Gogoi, the state government is committed to holding elections to the Mising Autonomous Council and said the Council has been established for the welfare of Mising community.

4 killed in Tezpur mishap
