PM coming to cast vote

Dispur turns into a security fortress a day before the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls. Dispur Govt HS School seems to have drawn maximum concentration of the security forces.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is all set to visit the school to exercise his franchise on Thursday. Dr Singh, who is on his last visit to the state as a prime minister, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati Airport at 12 noon by a special plane.

Then Dr Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, will straightly leave for Dispur by a helicopter where he would cast his vote at the Dispur Govt HS School at around 12-30.

During his brief visit to the capital city, Dr Singh will meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi and state Congress president Bhubneswar Kalita.

A team of special protection group has already arrived in the school premises to ensure safety and security of the prime minister whom Assam adopted in 1991.

Cost of PM and his family visit for casting vote in Assam msut be recover from his personal account as voter has to trevel to electoral booth at own cost/vehical as per the People Representation Act, there is no provisin of TA/DA/others allowances to voter for casting their votes

Bomb blast in Sivasagar

A powerful grenade explosion has left one person injured in Sivasagar town on Tuesday.The explosion took place at a house in Station Chariali at around 11 in the morning. Identified as Raju Ali, the injured has lost one of his hands under the impact of the explosion.The bomb was believed to have been brought to explode on the Republic day and was kept inside the house.Security forces rushed to the spot and sent the injured Ali to the Assam Medical College Hospital.         

Singh files nomination

Despite widespread resentment in the rank and file of Congress, Sanjay Singh filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha poll slated for February 7.Singh submitted his nomination papers in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita along with several ministers and Congress leaders before returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das. Singh is the party’s first choice candidate.

Kalita third choice

APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls and the third choice candidate on Tuesday.Kalita filed his nomination in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, parliamentary affairs minister Nilomoni Sen Deka, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma along with several ministers and Congress leaders before returning officer Gauranga Prasad Das.However, Kalita’s safe passage meets with increasing difficulties as the Opposition camp is fielding Haidor Hussain a consensus candidate.

Addl SP killed in encounter

An additional superintendent of police was among two were killed in an encounter with NDFB-S in Sonitpur district on Tuesday.The encounter took place at Batashipur in Dhekiajuli along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh interstate border where additional SP Guljar Hussain and a policeman were killed. At least 6 other policemen were injured and they were shifted to the nearest hospital.Hussain has left behind a 3-year-old daughter and a 15 days old infant son.

Bombs seized in Goalpara

Goalpara police seized five crude bombs from a house on Tuesday.The bombs were kept inside a house to be recovered during an operation conducted acting on the confessional statements of the ULFA militant recently captured in Guwahati.  

Lady ULFA leader dead!

A lady ULFA leader is believed to have died under mysterious circumstances in Myanmar camp. She was none other than Anju Saikia alias Dalimi Dutta who hailed from Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district.But there is no confirmation either from ULFA or from the police. Police officials in Gaurisagar are tightlipped on the inputs even three days after the sad news spread like wildfire. Even the bod of the ULFA cultural secretary has yet to be spotted.But sources told Assam Times that police got to know the incident a couple of days. But they have no official confirmation. APCC prepares candidate panels

Braving resentment and possible allegations of hectic lobbying, Assam Congress poll committee has prepared panels of candidates for 11 Lok Sabha polls.Attended by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and PCC president Bhubneswar Kalita along with 11 other senior leaders at the Hotel Greenwood Resort, the meeting examined the findings of the observers sent to each of the candidates.    The party has prepared one member panels for six Lok Sabha seats. Woman joins ULFA!

Yet another woman is believed to have joined ULFA-I. According to information, the women who worked with the state handloom and textile department in Guwahati went missing from December.Identified as Bobby Bora from Tezpur, she went missing from a private hostel in Guwahati. Her family members have moved Latasheel Police station after they got a letter from her.    

Water logjam ends

The deadlock over water supply dies down. The agitating workers would resume duties from Tuesday morning. The decision was taken following the assurance of public health engineering minister Dr Ardhendu Dey.Public health engineering workers were on strike from 5 in the morning alleging the failure of the government to redress their grievances.
