The Board of Secondary education, Assam is beginning its High School Leaving Certificate Examinations 2008 and High Madrassa examinations from Friday across the state. According to information, altogether 3,55,120 candidates are appearing in the examinations Of this figure, 6,337 candidates are appearing in the High Madrassa examinations. On the other hand, altogether 1,65,726 candidates are appearing in the higher secondary examinations which is beginning also today. An official statement from the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has informed that 1,39,320 candidates are appearing in the arts stream while the number of science stream is 15,315. The number of commerce candidate for the higher secondary examination is 10,568. The results of all these examinations is expected in May. In yet another development, the Kokrajhar Girls HS Schools is falling short of 65 English question papers.

One died and as many as fourteen people have been injured when suspected ULFA militants exploded a powerful bomb on Wednesday in Tezpur town forcing a spontaneous bandh of the town from afternoon. According to information, the bomb was planted at a bicycle in front of Borgola, at 100 km away from the Tezpur Police Station. Four of the injured people are stated to be serious and they have been rushed to the nearest Tezpur Civil Hospital. They are Raju Barman, Suraj Prasad, Srimanta Hazarika. Altogether nine people have been injured when a powerful bomb exploded in Tezpur town at around 2-30 on this afternoon. Three of them are in critical. According to information, the blast took place at Bargola, at a distance of 100 meter away from the Tezpur Police station. Eyewitness say the bomb was planted at a bicycle. The injured people have been rushed to hospital. Police and civil officials are there in the spot. But no lead has been achieved so far. Details are awaited.

The 6th Kaziranga Elephant Festival has been postponed to April 18-20 due to the ongoing examinations, elephant census in the KNP scheduled from February 20 to 26 as well as some other reasons.Earlier, it was informally decided to organise the KEF from February 27 to 29 . Police charged with batons on an illegal occupant of government land as he tries to block roads and stop police from entering in Agartala, Tripura on 26-02-08. Hundreds of police personnel armed with batons, shields, tear gas and gun started gathering at the Kunjaban area right from the dawn and warned illegal occupants to evacuate the area to which the occupants attacked thus police were compelled to use of baton. 21 persons most of them women were injured and at least 42 persons were arrested. Former Assam Assembly Speaker Pulakesh Baruah will seek legal action against the excess inflicted on him after he was arrested by the Nalbari police in connection with the teacher recruitment scam in Nalbari district. Addressing a press conference in the city on Tuesday, he suspected the role of senior minister Bhumidhar Barman who said that the arrest was as per the High Court instruction. Mr Baruah informed that there was no High Court order to arrest him.
