A Training of Trainers (TOT) programme on ‘Psychosocial Care in Disaster’ was held on 22nd and 23rd December at the Ayang Okum river bank bamboo cottage, Majuli. The objective of the training was to build self-awareness and compassionate social care through community based psychosocial support to reduce mental health distress in disaster situations, as affected communities experience various psychological reactions.
The programme was organized by the North-East Affected Area Development Society (NEADS), a local humanitarian and development organisation in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.
The training was imparted among the core members of NEADS' promoted Community Level Village Disaster Management Committees (VDMC), community frontline workers and youths.
The training was facilitated by Dr. Jaykumar C. Associate Professor of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. The inaugural occasion was graced by Dr. Nilakanta Pegu, the Joint Director for Health Services of Majuli district, and Mr. Tirtha Prasad Saikia, Programme Director of NEADS.
A total of 35 trainees from various flood and river erosion-hit communities in the Jorhat and Majuli districts participated in the two-day long training. The training was organized under the project "Humanitarian assistance and building people’s resilience & adaptive capacity to floods in Assam through a techno-humanitarian approach implemented by NEADS in partnership with Humanitarian Aid International (HAI) and financial support from HCL Foundation.

Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.
He said that the government is leaving no stone unturned to put Assam on a track of rapid development process. Patnaik also said that government was committed to fighting corruption.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that the Army court had taken a lenient view of the crime. He told reporters in Jorhat that he would urge the defence ministry to review the case to ensure proper justice to the 19-year-old victim.
