A historic novel titled 'Mahanayak Lachit Borphukan' based on the life of great heroic character, Lachit Borphukan who fought against mighty Mughal, penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury, educationist and writer was released on 1st July, Sunday at Guwahati Press Club. Gracing the occasion senior journalist D.N. Chakraborty said while the heroic exploits of Chatrapati Shibaji and Maharana Pratap Singh had widely been discussed through text books and other writings in many languages, there had been little discussion and publicity about the incomparable heroism and unique leadership of the great Assamese warrior Lachit Borphukan.
Another speaker, Padmashree Ajay Dutta, ex MLA and social worker also paid tribute to Lachit Borphuan for his great leadership during the great battle of Sarighat..Writer Raychoudhury on his speech, narrated the contribution of father of Lachit Borphukan, Momai Tamuli Borborua for building up character of Lachit Borphukan.

A full scale drive to evict the illegal settlers in Guwahati saw the demolition of over one hundred huts and buildings evoking mixed response across the food-hit city on Monday. Comprising executive magistrates, GMDA, GMC, water resources development department officials along with security forces, the specially setup teams launched the drive in the morning from Bhangagarh area where many houses belonging to the daily wage earners were demolished. Teams comprising executive magistrates, GMDA, GMC and water resources development department officials are carrying out the drive from Monday morning. The eviction drive began from Bhangagarh area where hundreds of huts were dismentled evoking sharp reaction from many sections of the people.

Caught in a Catch-22 situation, chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the Centre to expedite the steps to set up the proposed Brahmaputra River Valley Authority to firmly deal with the perennial flood problem. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gogoi said that Dispur has cleared the decks to set up BVRA in 2012. But the proposal has been pending before the Centre for the last two years. Sources told Assam Times that the Centre wants political representation of the north in the proposed BRVA in view of the failure of the Brahmaptra Board in the absence of political leadership.
Caught in a barrage of criticism for rain water havoc in Guwahati , Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the Kamrup metro district administration to launch eviction drive against encroachments in the wetlands and hills areas in the city. Chairing a meeting of the Kamrup metro district administration officials on Sunday evening he said that the hills and wetlands must be cleared of encroachment as soon as possible. After the meeting the authorties agreed to launch an eviction drive on Monday morning.
The Kamrup metro district administration has asked all illegal settlers in the hills areas to immediately leave their places to get rid of the recurring landslide problems where 4 people were killed on Friday wee hours. The decision was taken after the Kamrup metro district administration held a meeting with chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday evening. The district administration has already identified 376 vulnerable areas in the hills areas in Guwahati. If ned be, the chief minister has asked the district administration to set up refugee camps.
Stunned by widespread criticism in the time of flood and landslide in Guwahati, chief minister has cleared a slew of measures to deal with the issue firmly. After holding a crucial meeting with the Kamrup (metro) district administration on Sunday evening, Gogoi has asked the authorities to clear the rivers Bharalu, Bahini, Sorusola, Borsola, Silasaku immediately. He further asked the Guwahati Municipal Corporation to clear the roads and drains in the city within the next 24 hours. Gogoi started dealing with these firmly after rainwaters wreaked havoc in many parts of the city.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi sent Chandan Brahma’s resignation letter to governor suggesting him to accept it immediately a day after the transport minister put in his papers. Talking to reporters in Dispur on Saturday, Gogoi said that Brahma’s resignation won’t have any adverse impact on his government. “ It wont harm our government. It was his own decision to quit and I have nothing to say. But it would benefit the Congress,” said Gogoi. Notably, Brahma resigned on Friday a day after BPF decided to severe its alliance with Congress.
