48-hour Manipur-wide shutdown call by MUSU
IMPHAL: Most Valley based student organisations have extended support to the 48-hour Manipur wide shutdown call given by the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) beginning midnight tonight.
The shutdown is called for demand of removal of Manipur University Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey. The beleaguered Professor is refusing to leave his post despite weeks of strong protest spearheaded by MUSU.
Prof AP Pandey is facing allegations of financial and administrative irregularities which he has denied.
MUSU has vowed not to compromise with the authorities except for the removal of Prof Pandey from his office.
AMSU, DESAM, MSF, SUK, KSA and AIMS during a joint conference announced their support to the cause of MUSU.
The student bodies strongly condemned police brutalities against activies of Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) during protest yesterday in front of Raj Bhavan and Manipur BJP office here. They were echoing the demand for dismissal of Prof Pandey.
The alliance has demanded that all cops responsible for Monday's incident be punished.
Meantime, Thoubal district unit of DESAM organised a sit-in at Thoubal Keithel where alliance’s members shouted several slogans demanding that Prof Pandey be sacked.
During the demonstration, they also burnt effigies of Chief Minister N Biren, MU Vice Chancellor AP Pandey and Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar.
The Thoubal unit of the alliance warned of intensifying agitation in case all police personnel involved in the assault of DESAM leaders are not punished by 12:30 pm tomorrow, Wednesday.
Essential services and religious programmes in the state will be exempted from the purview of the strike, MUSU said.

Manipur on Thursday paid homage to former Chief Minister and Congress veteran leader Rishang Keishing at his funeral held at his Mantripukhri private residence here. Rishang Keishing breathed his last on August 22 at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. He was 96. He is survived by his wife Khatingla Keishing, three sons and one daughter.
