SC ruling draws appreciation

Many organizations in Manipur have welcomed the Supreme Court ruling against the excessive use of army and para military forces in the counter insurgency operations.

Taking to Assam Times over telephone from Imphal human rights activist Babloo Loitongbum said they are happy with the ruling. “Yes, we welcome the judgment. I am waiting for the copy of the judgment to go through in detail.”

Manu Charutvedi, a Delhi High Court lawyer told Assam Times over telephone that the apex court ruling will help be a huge boost for the human rights organizations who have been crying against the Arms Forces Special Powers Act.

“The Court talks of an independent probe into the allegations of fake encounters. But it is not clear whether it be set up under the commission of enquiry Act or a government controlled panel.” 

These organizations have reached hours after the country’s apex court got tougher with the excessive use of forces in the counter insurgency operation in Manipur.
