SC asks govt to release funds for NRC

The Supreme Court has asked the government at the Centre to release the remaining amount of the fund required to update the national register of citizens in Assam.

Reviewing progress of the ongoing process, a division bench of the country’s apex court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and RF Nariman on Tuesday asked the Centre to expedite the release of the fund.

Nodal officer P Hajeela told the court that it has not received the fund beyond Rs 307 crore to proceed further. Assam chief secretary VK Pipersenia was also present in the chamber hearing.

The progress of the entire project seemed to have stalled in the absence of funds and the Centre has of late, released Rs 100 crore which has yet to reach.
